There is controversy over the BHN results it produces but it does basic math for you in calculating percentages of compounds perfectly and a lot faster that I can on paper. Like wheel weights with an extra pinch of tin.
I just did some today. I mixed equal portions of pure lead and monotype. The comments so far are not far off but it depends what you think linotype is and what wheelweight alloy is. If you mix 3 to 1 with pure lead you will get 1. I consider that too soft but then I consider wheelweights too soft. They are supposed to be 0. You don't need to worry too much about the content of scrap.
That can safely be ignored and in any case if ignored it will simply increase bullet hardness slightly which can only be good.Fjale te urta per sjelljen
You can ignore tin in your calcs. It does nothing useful for bullets and is not needed. What you need to watch is that your linotype is not something else. I see that one reply mentions monotype. Offhand I forget the antimony content but it is a lot more than linotype. Of course the only result is that you'll get damn hard bullets which is OK. But just be aware of it.The company was launched and then almost immediately re-launched in as The Linotype Company Limited.
It set up a manufacturing plant in Manchester in December and started, but never completed, the production of "Blower" Linotypes. From an engineering point of view the machines of the English company were always quite distinct from those of the American company. We know also that the English company made their own drawings for types designed by the American company Caledonia, for example. It survived until at leastmanufacturing printing machinery. The Square Base and Model 1 machines corresponded roughly to the American models of the same designations. But beginning with the Model 2 and until the Elektron, the English Linotype models were entirely unrelated to the American models.
An English Model 2, for example, is a single-magazine machine; and American Model 2 is a two-magazine mixer. From an operator's point of view, the two most significant differences between the English and American machines are the matrix depth-of-drive and the magazine escapements.
The American depth-of-drive is 0. In every American Linotype from at least the Model 1 on I'm not sure about the Square Base yetthe matrix escapement is integral with the machine rather than a part of the magazine.
In every English Linotype except the Model 2 and the Elektrons, the escapement is integral with the magazine. The English version of the American Model 1. Linotype: The Film is a very interesting, very well crafted documentary about a machine whose exact role in the history of modern media remains somehow underestimated. In his book, Gramophone, Film, Typewriter media theorist Friedrich Kittler mentioned the machine only once, while quoting from another book:.
Deaf operator, Eldon Meeks sharing about his life with the Linotype. Surely though, one of the most captivating things that constitute this documentary is the passion that runs through it. From the filmmaker to the subjects he films and interviews, everyone involves with those machines seems to be vibrating with an inexhaustible and joyful love for them the film is full of funny moments and laughters.
As one of the participant elegantly puts it, it must have something to do with craft : the happy and harmonious marriage between technic and art, the intimate bounding between a creator and its tool.
In the end, most Linotype machines have met the same fate 35 mm projectors are currently experiencing previously here : one by one there are being condemned to the junk yard where they will be dismantled and resold for scrap metal.
But all is not lost. On one hand, we have the archive: Linotype: The Film will hopefully allow for a wider diffusion of this material it includes, among many things, rare footage from the 16mm documentary Farewell, Etaoin Shrdlu by David Weiss about the last day of the Linotype at The New York Times. On the other hand, some of those printing crafts are currently resurfacing for a second life, such as letterpress printing. The last words are borrowed from an eight pages article Doug Wilson wrote for the very first issue of Codex.
The Journal of Typography back in The article itself is an excellent complement to his documentary. Here are the last two paragraphs:. A growing community believes they know the answer to this question. Enthralled by the complexity of this enormous machine, the music of mechanical type at work, they are now devotees. Their eagerness to share the story of the man who —despite suffering through devastating illness, cruel deception, and heartbreaking setbacks— never relented, never lost the fire inside, will bring Mergenthaler and the Linotype the honor they rightly deserve for transforming our means of communication and our world.

It was patented in the United States in by Ottmar Mergenthaler. Linotype, which has now largely been supplanted by photocompositionwas most often used when large amounts of straight text matter were to be set. In the Linotype system, the operator selects a magazine containing brass matrices to mold an entire font of type of the size and face specified in the copy at hand. A keyboard is manipulated or driven by paper or magnetic computer tape to select the matrices needed to compose each line of text, including tapered spacebands, which automatically wedge the words apart to fill each line perfectly.
Each matrix is transported to an assembling unit at the mold.
The slugs produced by the machine are rectangular solids of type metal an alloy of lead, antimonyand tin as long as the line or column measure selected. Raised characters running along the top are a mirror image of the desired printed line. After hot-metal casting, a distributing mechanism returns each matrix to its place in the magazine.

Each of the matrices was individually notched so that it could return only to its proper slot in the magazine after use. Justification was carried out by…. The Linotype and Intertype slugcasting typesetters produce lines of letterpress composition in a single operation, starting with the assembling of the movable matrices.
Until then, each line of words to be printed had to be lined up and justified made to fill exactly the allotted space between margins by hand. After printing, the letters were replaced in alphabetical order by hand for reuse.

More About. Woodside Press - The Linotype.Project name of this font is MagedLT-Bold. In consultation with the Linotype Design Studio U. Maged, which has two weights, first appeared as a font in before its eventual conversion to OpenType in Thus Linotype's Maged font can be described as a trend-setting modern Naskh design that retains a sense of the fluidity of Naskh calligraphy: the letters, when composed, appear as freshly-written text characterized by rich, inky horizontals, tapering swash strokes and contrasting delicate ascenders.
The Bold exploits these features of the Regular without excess, tempered by the need for clarity at smaller sizes. Maged Regular and Bold are eminently suited to text and titling in broader column work brochures, magazines, advertising, coffee-table books etc. They include tabular and proportional Arabic, Persian, and Urdu numerals, as well as a set of tabular European Latin numerals.

Considering what a piece of junk the and the software running it turned out to be, Mergenthaler would have done better to just give the to Bell Labs for free and opened up all their hardware and software specs to them, on the condition that the Bell Labs team rewrote their software, and made suggestions for improving the hardware, or even paid Bell Labs for the privilege.
That would have been a win-win for both companies.Distesi al sole di ottobre tra i rifiuti

It's full of goodies. Budgets at Bell were huge. Reading about all the hardware problems they had getting a printer to work was rather amusing.
As I sit here waiting for the photocopier repair man to turn up it's illuminating to contrast the giant steps which have taken place over the last 40 odd years regarding the admittedly extremely difficult technical problem of printing black text and images onto pieces of paper.
ATsch on Nov 4, Computerphile interviewed one of the writers of this paper in a series of videos, who explained the brilliant and exiting history of this paper and its recreation, as well as the history of Phototypesetters. I remember thethe sound of the photo paper feeding, and the cracking sound the floppies made at certain times--was it when one was saving fonts to them? I worked on tbe hyphenation programs on ut, and wrote a large part of the application used on the Linoscreen book pagination terminal that was used to drive paginated books into a Tbe Linoscreen was a derivative of the Datekaquired including myself from Datek systems in Wembly North London.
Mergenthaller was our US AGent. I used to have my own taking up a full third of my office. They where incredably reliable, so this story here is an unusual tale. A definate lemon machine. As you say, they were very reliable. I had a lot to do with s over several years, and don't remember any problems that resulted from the itself.
So did phototypesetters basically work like printers, or was the output just used as a "master" to duplicate more copies of things like books using another kind of machine? The ran out "galleys", photo paper maybe eight inches wide. Items c and d could repeat a couple of times as necessary, and the customer usually had a look at the product as well "bluelines" produced from the negatives.Cesium oxide for sale
There's references to the requiring "silver nitrate paper"; basically a presumably page-sized photographic negative. That would have been used to produce a printing plate in the Gutenberg sense and then used to make actual hard-copies.
Animats on Nov 4, It had a custom CRT one line high and about 12 inches wide, which wrote letters onto photographic paper. The photographic developer, with rollers and tanks of chemicals was built into the machine, so it emitted developed pages. The machine was its own darkroom, with a door so that people could walk inside.
